Other names or spellings-
Definition-Part of the 24 principles of creation in Samkhya
Philosophy and an evolution of Prakriti. It is one of the antahkaranas
or inner instruments. The Buddhi is a bridge between Purusha and
Prakriti. It is a subtle material entity. It’s materiality and
substantiveness is the reason why we can take an herb, for example
to enhance the Buddhi, because that herb contains Buddhi as well.
Sometimes it is considered to be the intellect, which discriminates the
true from the false self, but intellect is not really a good word for it. It
is a structure (Individual) that clusters or classifies certain ideas
together. The Buddhi tends to classify sense psychic content in the
chitta (psyche) and also sense impressions that make their way in (or
out) from the manas (sense mind). It is considered to have more
Sattvic Guna because it brings knowledge. The Buddhi is a tool for
enlightenment but eventually must be discarded. It serves as a
reflection of the Self or Purusha but is not the Purusha itself. You
might say that the Buddhi is the structure of cognition that brings
knowledge. It may be related to the Jungian notion of the complexes
(which can be positive or negative) or cognitive processes that have
their core in the Archetype (Universal Structures). Furthermore, the
Archetypes are really reflections and manifestations of the Spirit/Self
(The Purusha).
