Sacrifice-Moving forward by giving up something of value to oneself but namely the pardisal childhood that the Puer or Puella never leaves.
Sedative-a substance that has a calming effect, relieving anxiety, tension, insomnia.
Senex-Opposite of the Puer/Puella. Too narrow in Consciousness as well as too committed, rigid and conservative and concerned with order.
Shadow-Is the Dark side of the personality that adds depth. It is located in the Personal Unconscious, like the Ego is an Identity structure or complex. Often seen as the “Alter Ego” that is inferior to the dominant Identity in Consciousness. The Shadow parts form as unsuccessful attempts at adaptation and become undesirable qualities that you or others rejected/ dissociated as a child. Although this aspect of the personality feels undesirable it contains creative and valuable parts of your personality for development and growth when you confront “your shadow.” When starting a yogic discipline often these undesirable qualities emerge and rise to the surface and left wondering why you are always angry after a yoga set for example. That is because that part of you has been repressed or forgotten. Attempts to nuke the Shadow out the personality have had a violent backlash resulting in many Guru Sex scandals. Teachers like Osho
attempt to assimilate the Shadow rather than destroy it. The Self also has a dark side and not just a light side. The Yin (Dark) is the compliment to the Yang (Light) and they are to be united not separated. Part of the Psychology in the West really harps on “Good and Bad,” and identifying with Good (persona) which leads to the bad (Shadow) problems as a result of further repression. The Shadow is where are touchy, sensitive or feel inferior/weak about something and is where the complexes are usually revealed. The Shadow can be seen as dark figures in dreams or people of the same gender.
Soma-Related to the Body.
Somatype-Essentially “Body Type.” Related to Sheldon’s 3 somatypes of Ectomorph, Mesomorph and Endomorph. Also, the three ayurvedic body types of Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Soul- The Spirit or Archetype or something that is not human (a pattern) that is moving through the person and the Soul has the capacity casts an image and especially in dreams in which consciousness can recognize, so consciousness can grasp the experience of spirit because of the soul’s capacity to translate the transpersonal into an imagistic form which doesn’t have to be visual. The brain or the body is a television set which isn’t making the image but the signal that is coming through and me the ego is watching it. If you damage the brain the whole thing doesn’t work properly. The Complexes are the distortions of the images or the signal. Thus the symbol becomes important in restoring the pattern of the image (Lionel Corbett). In Latin is the name for Soul is Anima, in German Seele. The Soul is different from Spirit but is part of the one polarity spectrum between Soul and Spirit. The Soul is in Touch with the Self.
Soul-image-Anima/Animus is projected onto the contragender. The term Soul-Mate here fits aptly because the opposite sex or same sex is considered to be the carrier of our Soul-Image. In a Relationship there are 4 personalities that are at work. 2 conscious and 2 unconscious that interact with each other in both ways.
Self & Supraordinate Personality-The Self is Inner Godhead. Is the Center of the Total or Whole Personality that includes the Conscious and Unconscious. It is always ordering and governing the Psyche and may be even outside it. It is Transcendent yet an empirical concept that can be observed via images and dreams. We first feel the Self in childhood through mirroring. The parents help or not help us embody this concept into our Ego which is still developing narcissistically. The Self is also the latent and unconscious Superordinate personality that is transcendent to the Ego personality because it include the Unconscious contents of the Individual and not the Conscious content. The Self could be similar to the Hindu concept of Atman or the Supreme Self. Idealization occurs because figures we admire carry the projection of the Archetypal Self. That’s why figures like Jesus or Buddha are long lasting Ideal images because they are projection carries and Symbols of the Self.
- Self-regulation of the Psyche-
1.Difficulty of adaptation. Little progression of libido.
2.Regression of energy (depression, lack of disposable energy).
3.Activation of unconscious contents (fantasies, complexes, archetypal images, inferior function, opposite attitude, shadow, anima/animus, etc.). Compensation.
4.Symptoms of neurosis (confusion, fear, anxiety, guilt, moods, extreme affect, etc.). - 5.Unconscious or half-conscious conflict between ego and contents activated in the unconscious. Inner tension. Defensive reactions.
6.Activation of the transcendent function, involving the self and archetypal patterns of wholeness.
7.Formation of symbols (numinosity, synchronicity).
8.Transfer of energy between unconscious contents and consciousness.
Enlargement of the ego, progression of energy.
9.Assimilation of unconscious contents. Individuation.
Consciousness and the unconscious seldom agree as to their contents and their tendencies. The self-regulating activities of the psyche, manifest in dreams, fantasies and synchronistic experiences, attempt to correct any significant imbalance. According to Jung, this is necessary for several reasons:
(1) Consciousness possesses a threshold intensity which its contents must have attained, so that all elements that are too weak remain in the unconscious.
(2) Consciousness, because of its directed functions, exercises an inhibition (which Freud calls censorship) on all incompatible material, with the result that it sinks into the unconscious.
(3) Consciousness constitutes the momentary process of adaptation, whereas the unconscious contains not only all the forgotten material of the individual’s own past, but all the inherited behavior traces constituting the structure of the mind [i.e., archetypes].
(4) The unconscious contains all the fantasy combinations which have not yet attained the threshold intensity, but which in the course of time and under suitable conditions will enter the light of consciousness.[The Transcendent Function,& CW 8, par. 132.] (Jung Lexicon, Sharp)
Sensation-Irrational & Perceptive Function of the Psyche. Conscious Perception via the Physical world and 5 senses. Can be an objective process and perceives what is present or existing in the immediate moment. Very literal and is concerned with the actual, the concrete reality or empirical facts. Perceives what is in the foreground but may miss what is in the background or what is to come. Roughly mapped over to Artha in which things are brought into actualization and concrete reality in the form of physical reality like money or possessions.
Spirit-In Latin Animus which implies something that is “Animating.” The Spirit is different from the Soul but is part of the one polarity spectrum between Soul and Spirit. Spirit is similar or identical to Archetype and is an Autonomous Complex that orders Consciousness in a patterned way by Incarnating into the Psyche that manifests as behavior through the body. The Soul and Spirit work together to embody the Self. Spirit/Archetypes are not always directly accessible because they are Autonomous. There is Wind or Ghost Like quality. Often symbolized by Birds. The Spirit is considered to be Rational in because of its impersonal quality. Spirit may correlate to the idea of Purusha which is trying to become conscious through Prakriti or Matter. The idea of Pneuma and Spirit come together in the form of Air, Wind and Breath which is also related to Prana.
Subtle body-Also related to Synchronicity and the Psychoid realm because it is a fusion of mind and body but not really either. It involves the somatic
unconscious as well as the psychic unconscious but has to do with the
functioning of the body in matter.
Superior function-Dominant orientation of Consciousness. The “Hero” function of the personality related to the Ego. What is one usually known by when speaks of their “Type.” He’s a Thinking Type, She’s a Sensing Type etc.
Suppression-When Psychic content is suspended. For example, finishing up
something you’re working on while suspending the urge to go to the bathroom.
Symbiosis-Psychic contents of one person’s personal unconscious is
synchronistically experienced in someone else.
Symbol, Reconciling (Uniting) –One of the main functions of the Psyche is to produce Symbols. Symballein, means to put together. Thus, the Symbol is like a mix of something into a bowl. It is different from a sign which shows something known, the symbol represents something unknown. The Symbol is the hallmark of the Transcendent function because it is a paradoxical image and is a union of opposites. Therefore, it contains something Conscious and Unconscious, Rational and Irrational, Light and Dark, and transforms Libido. It can replenish the being with energy and meaning.
Synchronicity-Acausal Orderness within time time and space but is not subject totally to it’s laws. Synchronicity is an Unconscious Arrangements of Meaningful Coincidences. It is when the Internal Image or Reality simultaneously matches the External Reality. The basis of Astrology sits on the theory of Synchronicity. Usually a motif repeats over the course a day or two or in a dream that your unconscious attaches meaning to. For example, one might be thinking of place you went to with loved one where you picked a type of flower and then someone speaks of that flower as you are thinking of it, then later you see it in a magazine to which your loved one says to you that he or she just saw seeds for that in the grocery store and so on. Eastern cultures like the Chinese think Acausally or Synchronisitically naturally. The I-Ching like Astrology is founded upon Synchronicity as is the Omenology of India. Marie Louise Von Franz in her book Psyche and Matter says that Western Language is designed to think in a linear and casual manner where as Chinese or Eastern Languages are more Intuitive
and Circular and therefore people have less difficult with the Acasual.
The Syzygy, Hermaphroditism and Androgyny-The Image of the Union of
Opposites. Cross fertilization of male and female traits. When the Male integrates the Anima (Inner Woman) and the Female the Animus (Inner Man). Images of the Divine Syzygy are the image of Shiva/Shakti, The Hermaphrodite and The Rebis in Alchemy. The Biological Syzygy can be represented by the coniunctio of the Pineal and Pituitary gland which is mapped on to Shiva and Shakti at the 3rd eye
center.
