the Brain Waves seated at the 3 rd Eye Chakra. Mahat is sometimes
said to be synonymous with Buddhi. However, the Buddhi has more
of an Individual character and Mahat a Universal character and a few
authors suggest that Buddhi evolved out of Mahat. Mahat is
sometimes thought of as the Universal Mind from where the Gunas
are thought to be inferred or deduced (in their disequilibrium, Prakriti
is the harmony of the gunas). Mahat is the cosmic ego of the
collective unconscious and the cause of consciousness. The ego or
Ahamkar is born from the unconscious. Mahat starts off the process
of differentiation (the ripples or waves) from the undifferentiated Mula
Prakriti (The Prima Materia) when the Gunas began to shift from their
equilibrium and increasing of energy and polarity. Eventually theseripples freeze and become grooves or structures in consciousness of
Ahamkar and Manas sense Mind.

the realm of Indra and they are forces that are like wild horses that
need to be harnessed. The Manas is the Sense Mind that is twofold.
It discriminates between the Inner Senses of knowledge
(Jnanendriyas) and the outer senses of action (karmenindriya). The
Manas is considered to be of the Rajasic Guna because it flows from
both inner and outer impressions. It records these impressions to
which the Ahamkar may identify with, and the Buddhi will classify.

Mantra
Pronunciation-Mahnn-T’ra
Syllables-2 (Man-Tra)
Other names or spellings-Mantram, Mantrang
Definition-Antra is the Suffix referring to the essence of a thought-
wave. Mantras are “magic” or “sacred” and specific sound currents
coming from the primal “Naad.” They are organized into precise
formulas for a desired result. One may chant a mantra out loud or
internally. A Mantra is the ideal thought wave of the Mind (Manas).
The Mantra directs the thought wave. You are always chanting a
mantra, which is to say there are always waves being created in the
mind. Mantra more readily and easily effects the mind and the
chakras than anything else. Mantras are different from the normal
profane words we use in everyday language. Each mantra is a
sacred power word (the Logos) that is endowed with a certain “sonic”
frequency used to effect different areas of life or contents and
structures in the mind. When one hits the right resonance
corresponding to inner or outer objects through mantra, these
contents can be uplifted into a new harmonic vibration. For example,
when one hits the note on “Ongg” with the navel and the nasal conch
(and proceed to chant the rest of the Adi Mantra, Ong Namo Guru
Dev Namo) it connects one to the frequency and harmonic vibration
of the Golden Chain that is available to access anytime we want in
the Collective Unconscious. Through the Adi Mantra, we can pull in
that energy from the ethers into the Crown chakra, through the rest of
your body and then radiate it back out through the Aura to effect the
environment in a Sattvic manner. Mantras work on your dynamic
unconscious structures. You are chanting something always at the
unconscious level, even if you don’t know what it is that you are
chanting and those profane mantras in the unconscious are
structuring your life. Chanting a sacred mantra can alter the structure
and dynamics in the unconscious and reset the vibration to a more
Sattvic state. Even if you don’t know what the mantra means, the
sound current itself carries an archaic meaning in its etymology to
which your unconscious can recognize. So although it certainly helps
to know what a mantra means intellectually, it is not required for it to
have an effect on you.

Mantra (Yoga)
Pronunciation-Mahn-T’ra
Syllables-2 (Man-Tra)
Other names or spellings-
Definition-One of the twenty-two yoga styles usually combined with
Laya Yoga (another style). Yoga is the method of uniting with the
divine. Mantra Yoga is the method of yoking with the divine by using
sound and specific sound currents to influence the divine or to merge
with it. The practice of mantra and using the right mantra is like eating
the right sonic food for your body instrument to for lack of a better
phrase “stay in tune.” This is because Sound (Akasha) effects and
orients the rest of the elements (Air, Fire, Water, Earth) of which your
body is composed of. Mantras when chanted outwardly are carried by
the breath and propelled by the navel point. The use of Mantra
works on the Throat Chakra is a kind of Neurolinguistic Programming.

Mantras
Definition-Formulaic sound recipes for the mind. The many types of
mantras. There are Bija (Seed), Ashtang (8 part), Trikuti (3 part,
Shakti (Power/Logos) and Bhakti (Eros) mantras to name a few.
Mantras are a sonic technology and therapy for directing the waves
(Tra) of the Mind (Man). Depending on the tradition, students are
initiated and Gurus offer personal mantras to the practioner that are
never to be uttered to anyone else. Other traditions offer collective
mantras that everyone can chant. In Kundalini Yoga, the mantra is a
Guru (The Shabd Guru), which initiates you into the tradition. They
are something you can do even if you are suffering from some
physical ailment. They are often associated with prayer. A common
Christian mantram, is the Hail Mary. Many mantras often carry a holy
name or sacred words to be repeated (jappa). Chanting the name of
God is a pathway to liberation and mantras were often used to invoke
the Gods or God Energy. Mastering the Word (Logos) is how you
master God.

Moksha
Pronunciation-Mau-Eksha
Syllables-2 (Mo-Ksha)
Other names or spellings-
Definition-One of the four aims (Purusharthas)in life. It deals with
release, separation, ultimate freedom, letting go & liberation. It exists
on the same pole as Artha (security, wealth, attachment). The
separation is like the unio mentalis of alchemy (The Separatio
Operation), where one separates the spirit (Purusha) from matter
(Prakriti). In realizing the truth (Dharma) of the reality of the Purusha,
one can become liberated. Who is being liberated? You and/or the
Gods (The Images). What is one becoming liberated from? In short,
suffering, to which the Indian Spiritual Systems are primarily
concerned with. Yoga is soteriologically oriented, which means,
involved in the process of salvation. One doesn’t wait until the after
life to become liberated and ultimately free. Autonomy of the spirit is
the name of the game. For Yoga, it is much more desirable to be
liberated in this lifetime. We need a meta-perspective and
metaphysical knowledge for enlightenment and liberation. In Vedic
Astrology, Ketu is the main planet of liberation and Jupiter and Venus
are the two Brahmins concerned with liberation. It is the Brahmin
(minded) caste that is interested in this meta-perspective and
liberation. The water signs of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are
considered to be of Brahmin caste and interested in liberation. The
Mosha houses in Astrology are houses 4, 8 and 12, with the 12 the
house bearing the name “Moksha Bhava.” Modern culture is mainly
interested in Artha (Wealth) and Kama (Pleasure) and mildly
interested in Dharma (Purpose) and least interested in Moksa
(Liberation). Because letting go is hard. We need all four to feel
fulfilled.
